Paxzen tablets : introduction, work, uses, and side effects
Describe Paxzen.
The FDA has granted Paxzen (nirmatrelvir tablets packaged with ritonavir tablets) an emergency use authorization (EUA) to treat mild-to-moderate viral infections in adults and children who have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and are at high risk for developing more severe viral infections that could result in hospitalisation or death. Patients must be 12 years of age or older and 88 pounds or heavier (40 kg).
As soon as a viral infection is diagnosed, Paxzen should be administered. It is given to lessen the frequency and intensity of symptoms or to prevent a serious disease that might result in hospitalisation or even death.
Physicians, advanced practice registered nurses, and physician assistants who are licensed or permitted to prescribe medications under state legislation may prescribe Paxzen for a specific patient. Under particular circumstances, a state-licensed pharmacist may also prescribe it for a specific patient.
- Paxzen is not permitted to be used for the following purposes: initiating therapy in patients who require hospitalisation due to viral infection;
- to avoid viral infection before, after, or for more than five days straight.
In Australia, paxzen is not an FDA-approved medication. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your choices, speak with your healthcare practitioner.
How does it function?
Nirmatrelvir and ritonavir are two medications that are part of Paxzen.
A SARS-CoV-2 major protease (Mpro) inhibitor called nirmatrelvir [PF-07321332] also goes by the name SARS-CoV2 3CL protease inhibitor. It works by preventing viral replication in the early stages of the illness to stop the development of a severe viral infection.
In order for nirmatrelvir to stay active in the body for longer periods of time and at greater concentrations to help fight the virus, ritonavir is co-administered with it. This helps slow down Nirmatrelvir’s metabolism.
A viral infection is what?
A virus known as a coronavirus is what causes a viral infection. Viral infection can be contracted through intimate contact with a sick individual. Viral infection diseases have ranged in severity from the extremely mild to the fatal. Although the evidence so far indicates that the majority of viral infection illnesses are minor, significant illnesses can occur and may make some of your other medical issues worse. Hospitalization for viral infections seems to be more likely among older persons and people of all ages who have severe, long-lasting (chronic) medical illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, or lung disease, for example.

Which other medications will impact Paxzen?
All of the medications you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements, should be disclosed to your healthcare professional.
Paxzen and some medications may interact, and this might result in harmful side effects. Keep a record of the medications you take so you can show your doctor and pharmacist any new medications you get.
You can inquire about a list of drugs that interact with paxzen from your doctor or pharmacist. Never begin taking a new medication without first consulting your doctor. You can ask your doctor if it’s okay to use Paxzen together with other medications.
If you use a combination hormonal contraceptive, let your doctor know. Your birth control pills’ ability to work may be impacted by Paxzen. Women who are capable of getting pregnant should use an extra barrier technique or another reliable type of contraception. If you have any concerns about the kind of contraceptives that could be best for you, see your healthcare professional.
Do not take Paxzen if you are taking any of the following medicines:

- ranolazine

Other medications may also have detrimental side effects when used with Paxzen. The concentrations of several other medications may rise or fall when using Paxzen. Because extra laboratory tests or adjustments to the dosage of your other medications may be required while you are using paxzen, it is crucial that you let your healthcare practitioner know about all of the medications you are taking. Additionally, your doctor might advise you to keep an eye out for certain symptoms that could mean you need to stop taking some of your other medications or lower their dosage.
How should I use Paxzen?
The two medications that make up Paxzen are Nirmatrelvir and Ritonavir.
For five days, take 2 pink Nirmatrelvir pills and 1 white Ritonavir tablet orally twice daily (in the morning and in the evening). Take all 3 pills at the same time for each dosage.
Inform your healthcare practitioner if you have renal disease. You might require a different dosage.
Completely swallow the pills. The pills must not be chewed, broken, or crushed.
With or without a meal, take paxzen.
Even if you feel better, do not discontinue taking Paxzen without first consulting your doctor.
Take the missed Paxzen dosage as soon as you remember if it is less than 8 hours after the scheduled time. Skip the missed dosage and take the subsequent dose at the scheduled time if you miss a dose by more than 8 hours. Never take two Paxzen dosages at the same time.
Call your doctor or get straight to the emergency department of the closest hospital if you take too much Paxzen.
