Disneyland is an entertainment park in Anaheim, California, owned by the Walt Disney company. Founded by Walt Disney and his business partner and brother Roy, the park is dedicated to family entertainment and operated as a for-profit venture. The concept of Disneyland arose from Walt’s imagination of creating a place that entertained, informed and amused its visitors.
What is Disneyland?
Disneyland is a theme park in Anaheim, California. It opened on July 18, 1955 and has undergone several expansions from its original 130 acres (0.5 km2). It currently occupies 500 acres (2 km2) of land and employs 23,000 cast members as of 2012.
As of 2011, it is the most visited theme park in the world and the second most visited theme park in North America after Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. According to a report published by Themed Entertainment Association and AECOM, Disneyland Park is the most visited theme park in the world with 16.1 million visitors in 2011most notably Japan and China.
The park’s name was changed from Disneyland to Disneyland Park to distinguish it from the larger Disneyland Resort complex which includes two resort hotels (the Paradise Pier Hotel and the Grand Californian Hotel), a Downtown Disney shopping complex known as Downtown Disney District, and several non-Disney hotels owned by third parties. The resort complex also features two additional theme parks: California Adventure which opened in 2001; and Mickey’s Toontown which opened in 1993.
Things to do in Disneyland
If you are going to Disneyland with children, there are several must-see attractions:
The Haunted Mansion
This ride is an attraction that’s both scary and funny at the same time. It’s great for children who are too old for Mickey Mouse but not quite ready for something like Harry Potter World or Universal Studios Hollywood.
Pirates of the Caribbean
The Pirates of the Caribbean ride is a classic that everyone should try at least once while they’re at Disneyland. There are two different versions of this ride — one in California and one in Florida — but both are well worth experiencing at least once. You’ll be transported back in time to 1750s New Orleans and will find yourself among pirates as they search for buried treasure!
